The mountain of Gebel Barkal, sacred to the kings of Napata, is an imposing butte of rock, and climbing it to see sunset is a fun way to get a handle on the archaeological remains at the site. These comprise a small field of pyramids (very similar to those at Meroe, only a bit better preserved), and the remains of a series of temples at the foot of the mountain, dedicated to the god Amun and his consort Mut.
